Born in Düsseldorf in 1927, Beate Kuhn grew up in a family of artists against the backdrop of the Second World War. Aged just 17 when the war ended, she took advantage of her newfound freedom and the new educational opportunities to study art history and ceramics. She also cycled across Europe to visit museum exhibitions.
At the crossroads of modernist painting, sculpture and studio ceramics, Beate Kuhn found a vital source of inspiration for her artistic practice. The beautiful and sublime aspects of nature also fuelled her imagination, which she translated into remarkable assemblages of forms evoking seed pods, succulents, exoskeletons, mushrooms and shells.
Throughout her career, Kuhn has skilfully played with contrasts in her works: the glossy and the matt, light and darkness, the convex and the concave, stillness and movement, the individual and the collective, as well as themes of birth, death and decay.
