Description
International Postwar Chillida, Eduardo Atzapar (Claw). 1973. Etching on heavy-weight vellum. 39.7 x 29.5 cm (79.2 x 60 cm). Signed, with the artist’s monogram and numbered. – Very few, very slight handling marks on the edges; a slight crease in the lower left-hand corner; tiny, pale brown spots on the outermost right-hand edge; overall in very good condition and exceptionally beautiful. A magnificent, high-contrast and beautifully textured print with very wide margins, including the artist’s margin on the right. Van der Koelen 73023. – One of 50 copies. – Printed at Atelier Morsang, Paris. - Published by Maeght, Éditeur, Paris. - Chillida’s imaginative understanding of form, surface and space, which he expresses with virtuosity in his sculptural works, finds a logical continuation in his graphic work. By playing with abstract forms, reducing his palette to the colour black and focusing on materiality, he creates prints of a highly distinctive and unique charm in works such as ‘Atzapar’. He captures his visual concepts in a relief-like structural form that is characteristic of his style; the deliberately placed, subtle lines are to be understood as a sculptural translation of his spatially expansive works. By effectively contouring the black and white, he creates a dynamic interplay between weight and lightness. Etching on strong wove paper – Signed, with the artist’s signet and numbered. - Very few, very slight signs of handling in the margins; a slight crease mark in the lower left-hand corner; tiny, faint brown stains in the outermost right-hand margin; all in all, in very good and impeccably fine condition. A splendid, high-contrast and wonderfully textured impression with a very wide margin and a deckle edge on the right.
