Description
Pop Art Ramos, Mel Hav-A-Havana #3. 1999. Colour lithograph and silkscreen print on sturdy Velin board. 57.5 x 57.5 cm. Signed and numbered. With the printer’s dry stamp. Mounted on backing in places. – Overall, an exceptionally good and clean copy. Hilger/Zwingenberger GL 1–9. – One of 199 copies. – Published by Galerie Ernst Hilger, Vienna. – Printed by Carini, S. Giovanni Valdarno. - In the ‘Hav-A-Havana’ series, which Ramos developed in numerous variations from 1996 onwards, the female nude figure swaps the usual consumer items – such as a bottle of cola, a chocolate bar or a doughnut – for a Havana cigar. The cigar, which has been imbued with the significance of a lust object since Freud, is both a colonial symbol of prestige and a sign of masculinity. Ramos has the nude figure play with it, thereby reversing the conventional roles. What the artist himself described as an ‘absurdist conjunction’ in the surrealist sense can equally be read as a reflection of the mechanisms of advertising and the mass media.
