Anonymous. *The Handbook of Delicacies, or The Talents of My Cook Isabeau Brought to Light*, containing the art of preparing excellent food oneself and enjoying fine dishes without spending too much. Included are instructions on how to make excellent and choice pâtés, delicate pastries, eggs with sugar and cream, fruit preserved in fine brandy, fine jams—both dry and liquid—glazed cheeses, and finally coffee and chocolate, etc., etc. By the author of *Le Petit Cuisinier économe*. Paris, Janet, Year V, 1796 and 1797. 18mo, beige percaline cardboard binding, title label on the spine (19th-century binding). [1] half-title, [1] frontispiece, [1] title page, pp. xiii–xxxviii (including ‘glossary or alphabetical index of the recipes in this work, etc.’), 264 pp. The first xii introductory pages, comprising the preface and the beginning of the verse piece entitled ‘Ideas of a Man of Wit on Cooking, To a Lovely Relative Who Had Recommended a Cook Named Isabeau’, are missing. A rare first edition. The author has remained unknown to the leading bibliographers. “This copy is complete with the engraved frontispiece… and ‘gritty’!” (J.M.) CH bookplate bearing the motto “lex est quodcumque notamus”. (Vicaire 562; unknown to Quérard and Barbier.)
