Description
[BRILLAT-SAVARIN (Jean Anthelme)]. *Physiology of Taste, or Meditations on Transcendental Gastronomy*; a theoretical, historical and topical work, dedicated to the Parisian gourmets, by a professor and member of several learned societies. Fourth edition. Paris, Just Tessier, 1834.
2 vols. in-8, [2] ff., 384 pp.; [2] ff., 412 pp., blue half-calf, ribbed spine decorated with gilt fillets and double gilt squares, marbled edges (Bibolet). A few stains on the covers, but a fine copy.
The first edition was published in 1826; subsequent editions are dated 1828, 1829 and 1834 (this one).
Written with extraordinary verve, the book needs no introduction, both as a philosophical work and as a manifesto of a gastronomic ‘school’. The author, a distinguished judge at the Court of Cassation, was unable to enjoy the success of his book for long: he died on 2 February 1826. (Vicaire gastr., 117.)
