He was elected a member of this Academy that same year. Alexandre Balthazar Laurent Grimod de La Reynière (1758–1837) was a French writer, theatre critic and gastronome, regarded as one of the founders of modern gastronomy. Author of the influential *Almanach des Gourmands* (1803–1812) and the *Manuel des Amphitryons* (1808), he helped to codify the art of dining, gastronomic criticism and culinary practices. A brilliant and provocative mind, famous for his hoaxes, he played a key role in the emergence of gastronomic literature in the early 19th century.
