Description
Egypt – WERNER (Carl Friedrich). The Nile. Twenty-four watercolours from life. Paris, A. Lévy, 1882.
Folio, comprising (2) folios, 97-(1 blank)-(2) pages; red morocco-bound half-basane with corner caps, decorated ribbed spine, gilt head, untrimmed (contemporary binding).
The volume is illustrated with a map and 24 magnificent colour plates, with captions for the scenes, based on the watercolours painted on site by Carl Friedrich Werner.
A pupil of Schnorr at the Leipzig Academy, Werner spent twenty years in Italy before travelling to Spain, where he painted the Alhambra in Granada. From 1862 to 1867, he travelled to the East, touring Egypt, Syria and Palestine, from where he brought back numerous sketches. As a non-Muslim, he had the privilege of being able to make sketches inside the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem. In 1867, he undertook a further journey specifically to the countries of the Nile.
The explanatory text is by Alfred Edmund Brehm and Johannes Dumichen.
A very fine copy on laid paper, free from foxing.
