Head of the King facing left, wearing a headband. Signature ‘JCR’ on the nape of the neck. Rev. SIT. NOMEN. DOMINI. BENEDICTUM. (date). Oval, crowned Shield of France, between two olive branches. G.322 (R5) – KM.Pn15 – Dav.1331; Gold – 42 mm – 12 h Top Pop: this is the finest specimen graded by PCGS! PCGS SP62+ (28891834). Special Strike (SP) with satin-finish relief and mirror-finish fields. Two small dents in front of the chin and a scratch on the neck. Minor hairline scratches on the fields. Beautiful golden patina with greenish highlights. Superb in Proof condition. Designed by Joseph Charles Roëttiers (1693–1779), this special strike marks the introduction of a new coin type that would be minted for over 30 years! The axis is at 12 o’clock, in medal strike, with wide mouldings rather than a guilloché pattern as in the standard issue. Finally, the mark of the Paris master mint master Mathieu Renard de Petiton – a fox beneath the bust – is missing. According to J. Lafaurie, 50 examples of these coins were minted (Lafaurie 1974, p. 509, based on H. Hoffmann, catalogue of the sale of the Regnault collection, 14–16 June 1875, p. 50, no. 593, according to G. Conbrouse, *Selection of Coins and Medals of the Capetian, Valois and Bourbon Kings comprising the iconographic series by Mr G.
