FRANCE - FRANCE Charles X (1824–1830). Platinum medal commemorating the King’s coronation, by E. Gatteaux and F.-A. Caunois, 1825, Paris. Obverse: CAROLUS. X. REX. – CHRISTIANISSIMUS. Bust of the King facing right, crowned, wearing an ermine cloak, an embroidered cravat and the Grand Collar of the Order of the Holy Spirit; below, the signature DE PUYMAURIN. NUMIS. PR. and E. GATTEAUX. Reverse: REX. CAROLUS. CŒLESTI. OLEO. UNCTUS. Scene of the King’s anointing, the King kneeling on the right before the Archbishop, surrounded by six Peers of France and a servant; in the exergue, in six lines: ADSTANTIBUS. FRANCIAE. Several versions of the reverse die exist for this medal; this one features ‘CŒLESTI’ and ‘REMIS’ at the end of the exergue, by Caunois. Extremely rare in this metal! Minor scratches on the fields, barely scuffed with a few hairline marks. Superb. Platinum medals were struck regularly during the Restoration by the Monnaie des Médailles, as attested by the production registers, but always in very small quantities. According to figures provided by A. Weil in 1980, in 1825, 102,316 medals were struck, of which only 787 were in gold and 20 in platinum! The purpose of these medals is known: they were presented by the King to distinguished visitors, or intended for a few wealthy collectors who could purchase them at the Hôtel des Monnaies, such as the Duke of Rivière France: Charles X (1824–1830) Platinum Coronation Commemorative Medal. Of the several die marks available for the reverse of this medal, this specimen features the type bearing the inscription ‘CŒLESTI’ and ‘REMIS’ at the bottom,a work by the engraver Mr Konoa. Platinum strikes are extremely rare! Minor friction marks on both sides of the field, accompanied by small scratches and a few hairline scratches. In superb condition. Although production ledgers confirm that platinum medals were regularly struck at the Medal Mint during the Restoration period,their numbers were always extremely limited. According to figures presented by Mr A. Weil in 1980, of the 102,316 medals produced in 1825, only 787 were made of gold,whilst only 20 were made of platinum! The purpose of these medals is clear: they were intended as gifts from the King to dignitaries, or for purchase from the Mint by wealthy collectors such as the Duke de Rivière.
