FRANCE - FRANCE Second Empire / Napoleon III (1852–1870). 100-franc trial coin with laureate head, burnished blank (PROOF) 1868, E, Paris. Obverse: NAPOLEON III EMPEREUR. Laureate head facing right, with ‘différent’ below and the signature ‘BARRE’. Rev. EMPIRE FRANÇAIS. Imperial coat of arms resting on a crowned mantling and surmounting the sceptre and the hand of justice, flanked by 100 - FRs; below (mint mark) (date) (variant). G.1136 p.584 (2021) – Maz.1604 – VG.3716; Gold – 35 mm – 6 h Top Pop: appears to be the only specimen graded by NGC (not listed on the website)! From a Heritage auction, ANA Signature Sale 3033, 8 August 2014, lot 23226. NGC PF 61 (3898630-005). Special strike on a burnished blank (PROOF): the fields are mirror-like and the raised details are slightly matt by contrast. Smooth edge. Minor bag marks and slight signs of handling with micro-impacts in the fields and on the raised details. Slight flattening on the high reliefs (on the zygomatic arch, the tops of the laurel leaves, the end of the ribbon) and scratches on the reverse. However, it has a fine appearance with most of the original lustre retained, barely tarnished, and no major flaws. Extremely rare, with only a few examples known! Superb in mint condition. Nevertheless, it is in a beautiful overall condition, retaining almost all of its original lustre, with a slight brownish tinge but no major defects. Only a few examples survive! Extremely rare.
