Description
India, Gujarat or Rajasthan, 19th/20th century
Belt buckle, engraved brass, Sanskrit, approx. 10 x 13 cm; description in Dutch on a document, translated as follows: Note regarding the Indian buckle The main inscription appears to consist of names and honorary titles, such as mohārājādhirāja, which can be translated as ‘great king of kings’ or ‘supreme ruler’. Gajendra Vikrama likely corresponds to the proper name of the sovereign mentioned. The term Faluka appears to refer to a specific geographical area and could denote a territory or a title associated with a great sovereign. It is consistently preceded by the term samvar, the exact meaning of which remains to be clarified. The date appears to be annual. It would clearly refer to the year 1856, although the reading of the digit 5 remains uncertain. Adding 57 years therefore gives 1913, which could correspond to a date 57 years later. The script is Devanagari, with certain ligatures that might point to north-western India, perhaps Gujarat or Rajasthan. However, a smooth and complete reading of the text could not be established immediately.
