Attributed to Jules Frédéric BOUCHET (1799 - 1860) Decorative projects with antique motifs, medallions and arabesques Pair of drawings, pen and grey ink, watercolour 45.5 x 12.5 cm A pupil of Percier, Jules Frédéric Bouchet is best known for having been one of the architects of Napoleon's tomb at Les Invalides in 1854, a position in which he succeeded another of his masters, Visconti. During his stay in Rome, he brought back many drawings that inspired him throughout his career, some of which he published in a book (La villa Pia des jardins du Vatican, Paris, 1837). He worked on the restoration of the Laurentin, the house of Pliny the Younger, based on the writings of its owner, presented at the Salon of 1851, and which was engraved (Le Laurentin, maison de campagne de Pline le consul, restaurée d'après sa lettre à Gallus, Paris, Bonaventure, 1852). Writings on this villa were used as a basis for architectural competitions, of which our drawing no. 347 is an example, and should be read in conjunction with our work lot no. 3.
