AUBUSSON, based on drawings by François BOUCHER (1703–1770) and Jean-Joseph DUMONS (1687–1779). The Shepherdess with a Crook. Wool and silk tapestry depicting Chinese figures in a landscape, a shepherdess and a flute player. 18th century. 250 x 269 cm. Damage, restoration and reinforcement backing. This tapestry is part of *La Tenture chinoise*, which was based on drawings by François Boucher presented in 1742 at the Salon du Louvre and subsequently translated by Jean-Joseph Dumons into cartoons for the Royal Tapestry Workshop at Beauvais, where the series was woven in at least ten sets, between 1743 and 1775. The design was later reproduced in Aubusson. Jean-Joseph Dumons was appointed painter to the Aubusson Manufactory by Louis XV in 1731, following an apprenticeship in the workshop of François de Troy. The latter adapted and expanded on François Boucher’s *La Tenture chinoise* following a commission from Jean-François Picon, a merchant and manufacturer in Aubusson.
