_________
It was at the dawn of the 20th century, in the early days of the automobile, that the Renault brothers made their mark. The company they founded in 1898 quickly built up an impressive track record in the early races and introduced technological innovations that would shape the automobile industry, including numerous patents such as Louis Renault’s famous direct-drive gearbox.
A high-end touring saloon, the Renault Type X appeared in 1905 as the successor to the 1904 Type U 14/20HP. It was equipped with the excellent Renault 4-cylinder (90 x 120) engine, with a displacement of 3,050 cm³ and side valves, with the radiator positioned behind the engine. This layout enabled the then-avant-garde design of the “Renault bonnet”, a hallmark of the brand until the 1930s. The Type X was available in three versions: standard (A), long (B) and short (C). The Type X1 (B series) is the extended version with a wheelbase of 308 cm. As with all 1905 Renaults, the Type X features a pressed steel chassis. With its semi-elliptical suspension and 4-speed direct-drive gearbox, the Type X showcased the expertise of the Renault brothers. Aimed at winning over an international clientele, this car embodied the French elegance and luxury of the Belle Époque limousines. Synonymous with refinement and prestige, it was highly sought after by the elite, winning over many monarchs such as King Edward VII in 1906.
The Chartres Gallery is delighted to present this 1908 Renault 14CV, Type X1 (Series B), chassis no. 13078. This is a long-wheelbase limousine, bodied by the Labourdette workshops as a Landaulet. The rear section of the passenger compartment can be converted into a convertible. The vehicle comes with a standard French registration document from 2017 (SIV format). In an authentic overall condition, this Renault 14CV Type X1 has been in the GENIN family since 1912. Passed down through four generations, it has remained one of the iconic cars in the albums of this family of collectors, from father to son. A partial restoration of the bodywork has been carried out, with the application of a royal blue paint finish contrasting with the black bodywork and running boards. The car is in fairly good overall condition, with some signs of wear and minor imperfections. An old repair is visible on the bonnet. The bodywork and the pressed steel chassis are in a used condition but appear sound. They show no significant signs of impact or corrosion. The mechanical components are complete but their operation could not be tested.
The cockpit features a bench seat with bucket seats and ‘Chesterfield’-style upholstered backrests in good original condition; the seat cushions have been reupholstered and are comfortable. The windscreen has been replaced and is in good condition; it can be raised to attach to the roof. The dashboard, fitted with the Dubrulle lubrication system, the five-spoke steering wheel with a wooden rim, and the trumpet-style horn are all in fairly good condition. Access via the rear-hinged door reveals a spacious interior, a comfortable fabric-upholstered bench seat and two matching removable folding seats. The interior as a whole is in a satisfactory original condition, showing signs of wear (headlining, upholstery), with the windows likely having been replaced and in good condition. The Landaulet’s original soft top appears to be original. It could benefit from a refurbishment to fully enjoy the pleasures of this convertible. The headlights and tail lights have been removed and partially dismantled. They feature brass fittings in fairly good condition and appear to be complete. Three of the four wooden-spoked wheels have been repainted yellow. New tyres will be required to confidently test the claimed top speed of around 80 km/h. The vehicle comes with its original tool kit, which appears to be complete in the passenger-side boot.
A fascinating historical file accompanies the vehicle. It contains various original documents, including the purchase invoice and the 1912 registration document, various maintenance invoices since then, a detailed handwritten logbook on the vehicle’s use, and even a magazine recounting a few anecdotes from the life of this X1. The latest invoices from 2024 and the family’s account confirm that the car was on the road until recently. Regularly serviced and having been off the road for only a short time, getting it running again should pose no problem; the engine turns freely.
This Renault Limousine, with a Landaulet body by Labourdette, is a wonderful opportunity to acquire a piece of French motoring history. A testament to Renault’s pioneering spirit and its commitment to excellence, this is a unique car eligible for numerous classic car events.
