Description
Anonymous photo album, 106th Observation Squadron, United States (53 original photographs)
This album depicts the daily life and various aspects of the 106th Observation Squadron, flying O-47s, during manoeuvres in Louisiana in 1940, before the USA entered the war. Some of the photographs are dated 18 August 1940 and were taken in Natchitoches, Louisiana. The O-47 aircraft was somewhat obsolete by this time, but it enabled the American forces to train whilst awaiting new, far more capable aircraft.
Photographs from this period of the war are relatively rare, particularly from the American side, which was at the time pursuing an isolationist policy in order to stay out of the global conflict.
In August 1940, we were still more than a year away from the attack on the American fleet at Pearl Harbour, which would lead to the USA entering the war. This album shows the accommodation conditions for the squadron’s members, in a gymnasium or in tents, and includes a gallery of portraits of airmen and their early equipment, notably the famous ‘pith helmet’ designed for tropical zones.
