Description
. NIGNON, Édouard. The Heptaméron for Gourmets, or the Delights of French Cuisine. Forewords by L. Descaves, H. de Régnier, L. Tailhade, G. Apollinaire, A. Mary, F. Fleuret and E. Godefroy. Illustrations by O. Guillonnet and H. Varenne, engraved by Jarraud. Luzarches, Daniel Morcrette, 1979 – Jean Dedicourt, printer in Seugy – Bound according to the publisher’s design by La Reliure d’Art du Centre in Limoges. Large quarto, superb publisher’s binding in full sand-coloured sheepskin, adorned with rich embossed and gilt decoration inspired by 16th-century bindings, with decorated endpapers and gilt head, preserved in its matching slipcase - Printed on pure-fibre vellum on the ‘Lana’ press: limited edition of 260 copies, comprising 250 copies numbered from 1 to 250 and 10 non-commercial copies numbered I to X. Our copy, no. 246/250, is hand-numbered and signed by the publisher – 355 pp. A luxurious second and definitive edition, largely based on the original, of this famous gastronomic work by Édouard Nignon, a renowned chef and culinary author, the first edition of which was published in 1919 with a print run of just 150 copies. This reprint, based on the original manuscript rediscovered in 1930, has been significantly expanded: it contains 883 recipes, including 263 previously unpublished ones, representing more than a third of new material compared with the original edition. The illustrations comprise a substantial decorative ensemble: a large cover frame, a drop-leaf on the back cover, woodcuts within the text, eight large drawings, as well as numerous frames, headings, drop-leaves and initials. This copy is completed, at the end of the volume, by the series of eight black-and-white engravings, which round off its bibliophilic quality. Excellent condition: a very fine copy, the binding well preserved, the interior fresh, the slipcase present, with very slight signs of wear to the slipcase and edges, nothing serious. Expert: Mr Geoffroi PICARD DU CHAMBON
