Description
Set of 3 plates with ‘alphabetic’ designs. 1/ - Terre de fer, Choisy-le-Roy, H B & Co [H. Hautin and L. Boulanger from 1836 to 1863]. Dessert plate (20 cm in diameter) with the base decorated with two images: one of a Punch figure bearing the capital and lower-case letter ‘P’, the other a scene of a collection in a church featuring the letter ‘Q’. The rest of the decoration consists of fish, a butterfly and a set of skittles. The rim bears the alphabetical sequence “Babebibobu… Yayeyiyoyu” in green letters, ending at “Zaze”. There is no letter ‘A’. A small crack and a tiny chip on the reverse. Formed part of a set of 12 plates. 2/ - Paris, G.D. [G. Dreyfus, trademark registered in 1884]. Dessert plate (19.3 cm in diameter) with a plain white background; the rim is decorated with a motif of eight children writing the alphabet on a slate, reading the alphabet or a book, with the text ‘Belles-Lettres’ in capital letters. The design is signed ‘Gédé’ [for G. Dreyfus]. Part of a series of 12 plates. 3/ - Deep plate in white enamelled sheet metal, decorated on the centre with a clock face showing 14:55 and on the rim with the alphabet in capital letters, featuring a star in the space between the Z and the A. Dimensions: 20.1 cm in diameter. Numerous chips around the rim and on the base, and two holes repaired with tin on the outside of the dial. An unusual and rare item. Overall condition: 6/10 – Rarity: 4/5
