MG and Jaguar delighted Californian enthusiasts and made their manufacturers’ fortunes. As a forward-thinking industrialist, Sir Black, the head of the Standard Triumph Group, seized the opportunity: he launched a project for a robust, economical, simple and high-performance sports car. Thus began the Triumph Roadster (TR) range, which went on to enjoy enormous success. The TR3A, produced from 1957 to 1961, is one of the most iconic models. It features a long bonnet, graceful curves and charming little doors that invite the driver to literally jump in. This is your chance to discover a simple, meticulously crafted interior, where the numerous gauges and touches of chrome set the tone. Behind the wheel, the TR3 is a pure thrill. It is an authentic British sports car from the 1950s – the perfect way to experience the open road! Offering unbeatable value for money at the time, the TR3A enjoyed considerable success, with nearly 58,000 units produced and 95 per cent of its production exported to the United States. Côte Basque ENCHERES is delighted to present this 1960 Triumph TR3A, finished in ‘Old English White’ with a matching hardtop, a beige soft top and a blue imitation leather interior. Whilst the majority of Triumph TR3As crossed the Atlantic, the one we are offering has a known local provenance: the original registration document, a copy of which is available, bears the notation “new vehicle” and features the Basque registration number “149 ER 64”, which the car has carried for over 60 years! This car spent 37 years at the Château d’Arcangues! Purchased new in 1960 by Madame Marie-Thérèse d’Arcangues, sister of Guy, Marquis d’Arcangues, it still bears on the boot lid the crest of the Parisian garage which, at the time, was a distributor for the TRIUMPH brand. The car was originally delivered with the hardtop specification, without a roll bar or soft top; these features have since been fitted to the vehicle. In December 1997, Mrs Marie-Thérèse d’Arcangues purchased a more comfortable XJ saloon from JAGUAR FERRARI BAYONNE, who offered to take the Triumph off her hands. The TR3 was subsequently put up for sale and then purchased second-hand by our current collector (with 91,142 km on the odometer in 1999). Since then, the car has been used and maintained regularly, as evidenced by the file of invoices (engine restoration in 2003 at 97,180 km, running gear, brakes). The mechanics are in satisfactory working order, both on start-up and during a test drive. The chassis is sound and shows no significant visible signs of impact or perforating corrosion. The bodywork, which was restored some time ago in its original ‘Old English White’ colour, now shows some localised signs of perforating corrosion (underbody, front wings, linings) which would benefit from further work to restore this beautiful British car to its former glory. The interior reflects the care taken by the previous owner; the blue upholstery with white piping is in fairly good condition, as are the soft top and the rare original hardtop. In generally satisfactory overall condition, this TRIUMPH has a known history and a unique and prestigious provenance. It is probably one of the most desirable TR3s, as well as being eligible for a number of motoring events (Tour Auto, Mille Miglia, Historic Monte Carlo Rally).
