Presented at the 1963 Frankfurt Motor Show, the Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint GT replaced the Giulietta, which had been a great commercial success. The same was true of the Giulia, whose career, with its many versions, lasted more than 15 years. The beauty of its lines was the brainchild of a talented 21-year-old designer who had just joined Bertone: Giorgetto Giugiaro. This was one of his first creations. The coupé was very daring for its time, with its 'Bialbero' powertrain at the cutting edge of technology. The engine block was made entirely of aluminium and had two overhead camshafts.
Initially offered with a 1600 engine on the Giulia Sprint GT, a smaller 1300-engined 'Junior' version of the Giulia Bertone coupé appeared in 1966. The 1600 version was then called the Giulia Sprint GT Veloce. Several evolutions followed, each more powerful and better finished. In 1968, the new GT Veloce (replacing the 1600) was presented at the Brussels Motor Show. The Giulia name disappeared, but the spirit of the car remained. The range was based on two engines: the 1300 Junior and the 1750 GT Veloce.
For the latter, the front end was completely redesigned, with a radiator grille equipped with 4 headlamps and the disappearance of the "letterbox" air intake. It is powered by a 118bhp engine. While performance is little better than that of the Giulia Sprint GT Veloce, the 1750 retains its racy temperament while being much more supple and therefore more enjoyable to drive. It is recognisable by the Quadrifoglio that adorns the rear quarter windows, reserved for the top-of-the-range versions of Alfa cars of the time. The interior was also more flattering, with a new dashboard featuring two large chrome-ringed dials and wood veneers that went perfectly with the tulip-shaped steering wheel and gear knob, also in wood. A second series appeared in 1969, with a few improvements (suspended pedals, dual braking system) and aesthetic changes (refined bumpers with vertical bumpers, indicators integrated into the front apron and simplified seat design), before being replaced by a new version equipped with a 2-litre engine, the 2000 GT Veloce, in 1971.
Also known as the Giulia 2000 GTV, the latter took the essentials of the 1750 GT Series 2 and added a few styling details, including a radiator grille decorated with 8 horizontal bars, a rear quarter medallion and elongated rear lights incorporating reversing lamps. The interior, meanwhile, is completely new, with specific upholstery and instrumentation. Mechanically, the stroke and bore of the 1750 engine have been increased to 1962 cm3, which, when fed by two Solex or Dell'Orto twin-barrel carburettors, produces 132 bhp. More torquey, supple at low revs and still very comfortable and sonorous at higher revs, this engine makes the 2000 version the most versatile. It is no less sporty for all that, thanks in particular to its self-locking axle fitted as standard and its weight, which is still kept under a tonne. It also has disc brakes and its beautiful 14-inch Campagnolo alloy wheels give it a Latin charm.
As the ultimate evolution of the famous Bertone coupé, the 2000 GTV is the perfect synthesis of Italian motoring and a sure bet for Alfa Romeo.
Our Alfa Romeo Bertone coupé is a 2000 GT Veloce, launched on 20 October 1975. It was delivered to its first owner by the Paris Alfa Romeo branch in the 8th arrondissement, as evidenced by the importer's plate still present in the engine compartment. In keeping with its origins, it has also retained some of its yellow headlights.
It sports an elegant and sober colour scheme, clearly original, with a Grigio Chiario Metallizzato hue combined with a black leatherette interior with matching carpet.
The history of this car is remarkable, as it has had only three owners since 1980, i.e. in the last 46 years, as the history file testifies.
Never fully restored, even though it had been repainted in the past, this 2000 GTV coupé provided a sound basis on which to build reliability when its current owner acquired it in 2022. In 2022, it underwent a major mechanical overhaul, with the engine and brakes in particular being rebuilt by JP Auto Passion, a classic car specialist based near Paris. In 2024, he also had the previously installed electronic ignition replaced. With just over 12,000 km on the clock, this Giulia 2000 GTV coupé is now in good working order. Aesthetically, the bodywork is not free from a few faults and the adjustments to the windows could be reviewed for optimum presentation, but the original interior, apart from a tear in the driver's seat, is rather well preserved. As a result, this 2000 GTV benefits from a pleasant patina, giving it an undeniable charm, befitting a classic car.
This is a choice example of an essential Alfa Romeo model, acclaimed for being both communicative and easy to use, in its top-of-the-range, most enjoyable version. Let yourself be seduced by this beautiful Italian car that will give you all the pleasure of the Cuore Sportivo.
