Following in the footsteps of the prestigious BMW 507, itself heir to the famous 328 racing roadster introduced in 1936, the Z1 revived the Bavarian marque's roadster tradition. It founded BMW's formidable Z roadster series, paving the way for the sculptural Z8 on the one hand, and the future Z3 and Z4 on the other. Which is quite logical, given that the Z name refers to 'zukunft', which means 'future' in German. Stylistically successful, the Z1 also boasts excellent aerodynamics. Technically, its powertrain, taken from the BMW 325i E30, is a 170bhp 2.5-litre M20 in-line 6-cylinder engine mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox. The engine's characteristic in-line 6-cylinder sound is enhanced by an exhaust system with catalytic converter, specific to the Z1. Aided by the relatively low weight of the plastic panel bodywork and good weight distribution, this engine gives the Z1 sufficiently dynamic handling for a convertible. The Z1's roadholding is very rigorous for a car in this category, thanks in large part to its monocoque chassis, made from hot-dip galvanised steel to enhance rigidity, and manufactured by Baur, to which a composite plastic floor is glued and screwed. The cabin, with its leather upholstery, bucket seats and competition dashboard, reflects the Z1's sporty feel. This feeling is exacerbated by the possibility of driving with the doors down in this original and unclassifiable roadster, which is both retro and avant-garde. Initially planned to be produced in 4,000 units, the success of this astonishing car eventually led to 8,000 Z1s being built worldwide.
