Replacing the legendary Beetle in 1974, the Golf became a legend in its own right, thanks in particular to its version, initially described as the 'Golf Sport': the GTI. It was presented at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 1975.
In addition to the design by Guigiaro of the 'standard' Golf, this sporty version was fitted with special equipment to distinguish it, which became a cult item: grille with red border, front spoiler and fender flares in black plastic, black windscreen surround, golf ball gear knob and sports seats with tartan check fabric. Above all, it has a 1600cc engine with Bosch K-Jetronic injection, producing 110bhp, initially fitted with a 4-speed manual gearbox.
This engine, combined with the Golf's self-supporting body, which weighed less than 800 kilos and was very rigid and sound, gave it top-class performance for its time. These qualities helped to build the Golf's legend, although it was in fact its versatility that made it such a success.
The Golf GTI I underwent a number of stylistic and technical changes over the course of its career. For the 1979 model year, at the same time as the arrival of larger bumpers, it was above all the 5-speed gearbox that made its appearance. Then, in 1981, the rear lights were redesigned, while the cabin was revamped with a new dashboard, steering wheel and gear lever.
In 1983, the engine was upgraded to 1800 cm3. The 112bhp output changed very little, but it was more torquey, less spiky and rounder, making everyday driving more enjoyable. Available with a 5-speed manual gearbox, this engine is more powerful, more pleasant and more economical, but less racy, much to the chagrin of some. The 1983 Golf GTI 1800 cm3, also known as the 'D-chassis', also benefits from softer suspension, making it more comfortable than earlier models. They were available with a five-door body.
It was also at this time that the Rabbit GTI arrived, benefiting from the latest developments but with a lighter finish to reduce its weight.
The more fully equipped GTI Plus followed in 1984, before the career of the first generation came to an end with the launch of the Golf GTI II in 1985.
