Description
1938 GEORGES IRAT ODU 4
• French classic car registration document
• Chassis number: 1508
• Ruby DU 4-cylinder engine, 1,078 cc
- A highly sought-after roadster
- Charming little French roadster
Founded in 1921, the Georges Irat brand produced around 200 cars a year until the late 1920s, before facing a financial crisis linked to its ambitions regarding large American Lycoming engines. It was in 1936 that the company recovered thanks to a small, sporty roadster with a 1,100 cc Ruby engine and front-wheel drive. In 1938, the ‘O’ range was launched, featuring an innovative rubber ring suspension – so named in reference to the circular shape of its elastic components – offering a significant gain in weight and flexibility compared to traditional leaf springs.
This Georges Irat is fitted with a 6 hp Ruby type DU engine, with a displacement of 1,078 cc, developing 37 hp. Light and agile, it still appeals to collectors today for its driving qualities and playful character. Georges Irat’s total production during the interwar period amounted to just 2,925 cars, making every surviving example undeniably rare.
The car on offer, chassis number 1508, left the factory in France in 1938 before being acquired by its current owner in 1993 and registered in 2015. It is in running order and presents a well-maintained appearance. The current owner has had the car restored twice during its lifetime (invoices not available). The engine starts and runs correctly. However, there is a fault with the rear left suspension, which causes the vehicle to lean to that side and will require repair. New suspension bushings are included with the car and will need to be replaced.
A very rare French roadster from the 1930s, in fine condition considering its age.
