1934 BMW 315/1 Roadster
Collector’s Registration Document
Chassis number: 47706
- Only 242 units produced
- One of the first BMW sports cars
- 328 engine
Unveiled in 1934, the BMW 315/1 Roadster occupies a pivotal place in the history of the Bavarian marque. Just a few years after BMW entered the automotive world, the manufacturer sought to demonstrate its technical and sporting expertise through a range of higher-performance models. A direct descendant of the BMW 303, the first BMW with a six-cylinder engine, the 315 featured a modern design for its time, with a space-frame chassis, independent front suspension and a six-cylinder overhead-valve engine. It was on this basis that BMW developed the 315/1 Roadster, unveiled in 1934. With its particularly elegant silhouette, long bonnet, rear-set cockpit and sweeping wings, it epitomised the aesthetic of the great German sports roadsters of the interwar period. With only 242 units produced, the 315/1 is now regarded as one of the first true BMW sports cars, directly heralding the legendary BMW 328 that succeeded it in 1936. It thus forms one of the cornerstones of the brand’s sporting heritage.
The example offered for sale belonged for thirty years to an American collector, who had acquired it from a collector in Toronto. It was then purchased by a major Dutch collector in 2018 at the Bonhams sale at Quail Lodge. The file contains several invoices and letters dating from 1987 to 2001. We also have photographs of the car in Canada, when it was painted in red and cream. We then find it on the cover of Werner Oswald’s book, entitled ‘Alle BMW Automobile, 1928–1978’. It was then painted green and black, the colours it currently bears. It was subsequently acquired by a French enthusiast, who, five years ago, got the car running again and restored the brakes. It has the distinctive feature of being fitted with the excellent BMW 328 engine, powered by three Solex carburettors, which gives it undeniable driving pleasure.
Please note that the car’s mechanics require a thorough overhaul before use, and that it is sold without its soft top, only with its roll bar.
It is notable for being fitted with the excellent BMW 328 engine, powered by three Solex carburettors, which gives it undeniable driving pleasure.
This is a very elegant vehicle, suitable for sporting events, touring rallies or concours d’élégance…… The soft top retracts completely into its housing, which is particularly elegant! It represents a particularly rare opportunity to acquire one of the most exclusive models from BMW’s pre-war production.
