An elegant sports convertible, it won over an international clientele thanks to its Pininfarina-designed lines and its brilliant twin-cam engines. Unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1966, the new Spider brilliantly carried on the legacy of its illustrious predecessor. Based on the platform of the Giulia saloon unveiled in 1962, it featured an entirely new body designed and produced by Pininfarina. Its curvaceous styling is characterised by a particularly fluid silhouette and a slender rear end, which quickly earned it the nickname ‘Osso di Seppia’ (meaning ‘cuttlefish bone’). This first generation also gained international fame thanks to its appearance in the film *The Graduate* (1967), alongside Dustin Hoffman. At its launch, the model was simply marketed as the ‘1600 Spider’. A competition organised by Alfa Romeo led to the choice of the name ‘Duetto’, which was quickly abandoned following a dispute with the Pavesi company. Although this name disappeared from the catalogues as early as 1967, it is still commonly used today – albeit somewhat loosely – to refer to the entire range of Alfa Romeo Spiders in this line. In 1968, the 1750 Veloce Spider joined the range alongside the more affordable 1300 Junior. All retained the famous twin-cam four-cylinder engine, fed by two Weber carburettors and mated to a five-speed manual gearbox. In 1969, the second series, known as the ‘Coda Tronca’ – recognisable by its truncated rear end – was introduced, succeeding the first generation, now referred to, by contrast, as the ‘Coda Lunga’. It was within this second series that the Spider 2000 Veloce was launched in 1971, powered by the 1,962 cm³ four-cylinder twin-cam engine developing 128 ch DIN. More responsive, more powerful and still paired with a five-speed manual gearbox, it represented the culmination of the Spider’s mechanical evolution. The most powerful and prestigious version in the range until the arrival of the fuel-injected models, the Spider 2000 Veloce is now regarded as the most desirable of the ‘Coda Tronca’ Spiders, successfully combining performance, driving pleasure and timeless elegance. The formula was, in fact, so successful that the career of this Alfa Romeo Spider continued through several iterations until 1994, testifying to the remarkable longevity of the concept devised by Pininfarina. Our example of the Alfa Romeo ‘Coda Tronca’ Spider – still sometimes incorrectly referred to as a ‘Duetto’ to denote this generation of Spiders – is the 2000 Veloce, the top-of-the-range version. This 2000 Spider, Tipo 105.24, was sold new by the Garage de l’Europe in Tournai, Belgium, to its first owner on 28 August 1973 and registered shortly afterwards on the 30th of the same month. It was subsequently registered in France in 2005, according to the Histovec report, then exported to Switzerland in 2013, before finally being re-imported into France in 2020 by the current owner. It features a rather unusual colour combination: its Avorio (103) exterior is paired with a burgundy leather interior and a black soft top. Although it has been repainted recently and headlight covers have been fitted to the front lights, its appeal lies in the fact that it has never been fully restored and is in very good overall condition, which makes it particularly attractive. In addition to some cosmetic work carried out since 2021, this Alfa Romeo Spider has undergone routine maintenance. It has just 71,900 km on the 5-digit odometer, which could correspond to its original mileage; it should be noted, however, that the odometer cable was replaced in 2024, although the odometer has been unreliable ever since that year. Nevertheless, the car has been driven very little since then. Apart from this fault, the most recent MOT in July 2026 revealed only two minor faults, attesting to the sound condition of this example. The test drive proved entirely satisfactory, highlighting the car’s dynamic qualities, with a fully functional engine and running gear in good condition, delivering precise and enjoyable handling. In addition to the brief service history file that comes with it, this lovely Alfa Romeo Spider still comes with its original service booklet, partially stamped, and its owner’s and maintenance manual, which is always a sign of the care taken with the vehicle. It also features a rare black hardtop – an official, numbered (01100) fibreglass accessory from the manufacturer – allowing you to enjoy it comfortably in all weathers. In a state of preservation that is as rare as it is impressive – clearly the result of careful and consistent maintenance – this Alfa Romeo Spider is ready to hit the road. It embodies everything one could expect from an Italian classic: timeless styling, a lively engine, an elegant design and, above all, the promise of enjoying one of the finest expressions of Alfa Romeo’s craftsmanship to the full, with the wind in your hair.
