STARTING PRICE: 10,000 euros ROLLS-ROYCE 20/25 ESTATE CAR – 1934 Chassis GLG1 A Rolls-Royce with an unusual history, which was converted into a remarkable ‘Estate Car’ after the war Presented in a rare Estate Car configuration, this 1934 Rolls-Royce 20/25, bearing chassis number GLG1, is a particularly unusual example from the prestigious British manufacturer’s production run. Delivered new in 1934, the car was originally fitted with a Landaulette body built by Maythorne, a coachbuilder based in Biggleswade, Bedfordshire. This bodywork combined a closed front cabin with an open-top section for the rear passengers, in the finest tradition of interwar luxury cars. Its history then took a turn that was, to say the least, unusual. In the aftermath of the Second World War, at a time when luxury cars were sometimes required to be more practical than ceremonial, the Rolls-Royce was converted into an Estate Car, in other words a hunting estate. According to its history, this conversion was carried out by a farmer who then used the car to transport livestock. When it was rediscovered several decades later, the interior still bore traces of this astonishing second life. Fortunately, certain characteristic features of its original configuration had been preserved, notably the glass partition between the driver and the passengers, as well as the folding seats. In 1989, the car was acquired by its current owner whilst it was in a state of serious disrepair. A major restoration was then undertaken in England and completed in 1992, focusing in particular on the chassis, mechanical components, bodywork and interior. On this occasion, the car was restored to an elegant burgundy and black livery, complemented by matching leather upholstery. It then went on to lead a second, more glamorous life, being used in Sweden by a restaurant for weddings and grand ceremonies, where it was registered as PAH 414. Today, this Rolls-Royce displays a pleasant patina of age, bearing witness to its eventful history. Its engine, a straight-six, is described as running smoothly. Its interior layout remains particularly spectacular: four permanent seats complemented by five folding seats, giving a total capacity of nine passengers. The glass partition between the driver and passengers – an iconic feature of its former role as a chauffeur-driven car – is still present and fully functional.
