History:
Georges Latil was a brilliant inventor and a pioneer of all-terrain vehicles, particularly those capable of towing heavy loads using the four-wheel drive and steering system – an innovation that proved extremely useful during the First World War. The fame of this machine has stood the test of time, beginning at the start of the last century and continuing until the 1990s. This barge tractor was a replacement for tow horses, which themselves had replaced human labourers. In the 1920s, and sometimes even a little before the First World War, horses were replaced by small steam locomotives on networks set up near certain factories or towns. The arrival of these Latil tractors, with four-wheel drive and front-wheel steering, before the Second World War was quite revolutionary from a technical point of view. Manoeuvring was made easy with this highly modern machine, capable of turning round quickly and changing direction to tow these immense barges laden with freight, coal, timber, livestock and grain. Latil was an innovator: all-wheel drive and four-wheel steering – all of this stemmed from research carried out in the wake of the wars, where military lorries served as test vehicles before finding a civilian application where there was nothing else available. Diesel engines replaced petrol and petrol, and the power of these slow-revving engines ensured that the work was carried out smoothly.
Condition:
This tractor was restored some time ago with significant improvements to the electrical system, although these do not conform to the original specifications – wiring, connections and fuses. This ensures a certain level of safety. Furthermore, the Plexiglas in the doors has replaced the original glass, and the bench seat is not the original one; it is from the rear compartment of a modern car. It should also be noted that the radiator is not that of the original model, but from another. The front headlights do not correspond to the equipment of the period, nor do the rear red lights. The tyres are identical to those fitted to GMCs. The two tow hooks are indeed the ones that were fitted to it; the upper hook is the one used to tow boats, pivoting slightly from right to left depending on the load and the river currents.
