Description
1971 FORD THUNDERBIRD LANDAU HARDTOP – History:
Unveiled in the autumn of 1970 for the 1971 model year, the sixth generation of the Ford Thunderbird marked a new evolution of the famous American ‘Personal Luxury Car’. More imposing than its predecessors, it boasted a spectacular design characterised by a massive grille with horizontal slats, a long, sculpted bonnet and an elegant silhouette prioritising comfort and prestige.
The Landau Hardtop version is one of the most refined variants in the range. It is distinguished by its vinyl-covered roof, its distinctive badging and a particularly luxurious finish designed to rival the Cadillac Eldorado, Buick Riviera and Lincoln Continental Mark III.
Powered by the mighty 7-litre Ford 429 Thunder Jet V8, mated to a robust automatic gearbox, the Thunderbird offers a remarkably enjoyable driving experience and remains to this day one of the finest examples of American motor cars from the early 1970s.
Description:
The car on offer is a 1971 Ford Thunderbird Landau Hardtop, fitted with the Ford 429 Thunder Jet engine.
Imported from the United States, this Thunderbird comes with a file including, notably, the US California Title, an official certificate from Ford Belgium, import documents, an application for Belgian registration, a previous roadworthiness test certificate and a Belgian sales invoice.
The chassis number, 1J84N154051, matches the administrative documents and the manufacturer’s certificate.
The car retains its original appearance with its vinyl-covered Landau roof, chrome trim, original wheel trims and a complete engine bay, fitted with its specific 429 Thunder Jet air filter housing.
The vehicle is presented as it came out of storage. A thick layer of dust, some traces of moss on the bonnet and dirt resulting from a long period of inactivity are visible. A few localised patches of corrosion are present, notably at the base of the rear window and at the junction with the vinyl roof, with no apparent perforation on the visible parts.
The interior appears complete and in line with the original specification. The upholstery, dashboard, trim and main fittings are all present.
The engine compartment retains a consistent layout with no visible major modifications.
This Thunderbird provides an excellent basis for a return to the road or a conservation restoration.
