Description
TRIUMPH STAG 1972 – History: Unveiled in 1970 and launched in 1971, the Triumph Stag was the grand tourer designed by Triumph to compete with the Mercedes-Benz SL and other high-end convertibles of its time. Designed by the renowned Italian designer Giovanni Michelotti, it stood out for its elegant lines, its distinctive central roll bar and its V8 engine developed specifically by Triumph. Available in right-hand or left-hand drive versions depending on the market, the Stag is fitted with a 3-litre V8 engine mated to either a manual or automatic gearbox. Despite a reputation sometimes marred by cooling problems, well-maintained examples are now a pleasure to drive and are particularly sought-after for their unique character. Produced until 1977 with just over 25,000 units built, the Triumph Stag is now one of the most iconic British convertibles of the 1970s. Description: The car on offer is a Triumph Stag first registered on 1 January 1972. The bodywork is in its original green colour (Paint Code 64). It appears generally sound and shows no significant corrosion. However, the paintwork, which is old, reveals numerous cosmetic imperfections, including traces of poor spray application, dust inclusions and several application flaws. The underbody is covered with a thick layer of protective Blaxon. This may have been applied as anti-corrosion protection following a repair, but it may also conceal any bodywork repairs or defects. An inspection on a lifting platform is recommended. The interior is complete but has undergone a previous refurbishment carried out using materials of average quality. The black vinyl upholstery shows significant signs of ageing, with the seat coverings delaminating and flaking in places. The dashboard has several cracks, and the imitation wood veneers on the dashboard and centre console are also cracked. The main on-board equipment appears to be present, however. The engine compartment appears relatively complete and retains its 2,997 cm³ Triumph V8 engine. The main mechanical components are present. The engine compartment contains a significant amount of storage dust, as well as several signs of surface oxidation. The wiring harness appears to have been modified in the past, and the sound-deadening material under the bonnet is severely deteriorated. A full mechanical overhaul will be required before the vehicle can be used. The vehicle comes with its UK registration certificate (V5C) and a purchase invoice dated February 2025. The various numbers recorded on the documents match those shown on the manufacturer’s plate.
