Description
RENAULT PRIMAQUATRE KZ6 1936 – History:
Unveiled at the Paris Motor Show in 1931, the Renault Primaquatre KZ6 succeeded the various iterations of the KZ series, which had first appeared in 1923. It was part of Renault’s aim to offer a robust, comfortable and relatively affordable family car, intended for private use as well as for government departments and businesses.
The KZ6 was fitted with the new Renault Type 343 engine, a 2,120 cm³ inline four-cylinder unit producing 10 fiscal CV, renowned for its smoothness, reliability and endurance. Coupled with a three-speed manual gearbox, it enabled the Primaquatre to reach around 90 km/h, a perfectly respectable speed for the early 1930s.
The construction remained faithful to Renault’s technical principles of the time, featuring a particularly robust separate chassis, mechanical brakes on all four wheels and a radiator positioned behind the grille – a hallmark of the make.
Produced for a short period before the arrival of subsequent generations of the Primaquatre, the KZ6 is now a relatively rare model, particularly when it retains its engine, dashboard instruments, manufacturer’s plates and original documentation.
Description:
The car on offer is a Renault Primaquatre KZ6, probably dating from 1931.
The bodywork is in poor condition, the result of a very long period in storage. The paintwork is heavily weathered and many parts will require complete restoration. Despite its overall condition, the car appears remarkably complete and retains most of its distinctive features.
The interior is also in a very poor state of preservation. The upholstery is badly worn, the trim needs to be completely redone and the floor panels will require restoration. However, the original dashboard is still in place, complete with its Jaeger instruments, clock and period controls, making it a particularly interesting component for a faithful restoration.
The engine bay retains its Renault Type 343 four-cylinder engine as well as almost all of its main original components: the carburettor, ignition system, alternator, starter motor, radiator, fan and manifolds are all still in place. The car shows significant storage patina, with dust, surface oxidation and numerous signs of prolonged inactivity. No attempts have been made to restart the engine, and a full mechanical overhaul will be essential before any attempt is made to start it.
