Description
1954 FORD CUSTOMLINE SALOON – History:
The Ford Customline held an important place in the American Ford range of the early 1950s. Positioned above the Mainline, it offered a more refined appearance, characterised by more extensive chrome trim and a higher level of equipment.
For the 1954 model year, Ford radically overhauled its engine range with the introduction of its new 239 ci (3.9-litre) overhead-valve V8, part of the so-called ‘Y-block’ family. Producing around 130 ch in its original configuration, this engine marked the end of the famous Flathead V8 in American Ford passenger cars.
Description:
This 1954 Ford Customline V8 Saloon is offered in the condition in which it was found following a long period of storage.
The bodywork retains its original appearance and a significant overall patina. The turquoise paintwork shows signs of wear, scratches, surface imperfections, blistering and various areas of oxidation. Significant corrosion affects several parts of the bodywork, notably the sills, the lower sections of the doors and various panel joints. Several areas have perforated corrosion and will require extensive panel beating work.
The roof and its edges also show marked corrosion, accompanied by flaking paint and localised damage. The numerous chrome fittings and wheel trims are largely intact but show oxidation and deterioration consistent with a long period of inactivity.
The engine compartment retains its 239 ci Ford V8 – approximately 3.9 litres – as well as most of its ancillary components. The assembly shows significant storage patina and widespread oxidation of the various metal parts. The engine has not been started, and no mechanical or road tests have been carried out.
The interior appears largely complete and retains its original appearance. The upholstery, door panels, dashboard, instrument cluster, car radio and various controls are all still in place. The car as a whole shows significant signs of ageing, with wear, dirt and damage resulting from its age and the vehicle’s long period of inactivity. The headlining is also original and shows signs of deterioration.
The manufacturer’s plate is still present and bears the serial number U4KG161883, accompanied in particular by the body code 73B, corresponding to a Customline Fordor Sedan.
Despite the significant bodywork and mechanical work required, its high degree of completeness, the presence of its V8 engine and overdrive gearbox, as well as the preservation of much of its original equipment, make this 1954 Ford Customline an attractive candidate for a full restoration.
