Dans les années 1970, Volkswagen étudie le remplacement du cabriolet Coccinelle. La marque fait alors le choix de développer une version découvrable sur la base de sa nouvelle berline compacte, la Golf. Lancée en 1979, la Golf Cabriolet est conçue et assemblée chez le carrossier Karmann. Le modèle rencontre un succès commercial prolongé, au point que sa production se poursuit jusqu’en 1994, soit onze ans après l’arrêt de la berline Golf de première génération. En 1987, le cabriolet bénéficie d'un restylage, incluant notamment des pare-chocs enveloppants de type « Quartet », destiné à moderniser sa ligne et à la rapprocher esthétiquement de la Golf II contemporaine.

In the 1970s, Volkswagen began exploring a replacement for the Beetle convertible. The brand then decided to develop a convertible version based on its new compact sedan, the Golf. Launched in 1979, the Golf Cabriolet was designed and assembled by the coachbuilder Karmann. The model enjoyed sustained commercial success, to the point that production continued until 1994—eleven years after the first-generation Golf sedan was discontinued. In 1987, the convertible underwent a restyling, notably featuring wraparound “Quartet”-style bumpers, intended to modernize its lines and bring its aesthetics closer to those of the contemporary Golf II.
