Citroën 2CV Type A – 1952
“Tour Auto 2018 with François Allain”
• Registration document: French
• Chassis number: 27927
• A historic tribute to the 1951 Tour Auto, in which the official Citroën crew – comprising Jean Degorces and André Chene – took part.
• A major project carried out in partnership with François Allain, Michelin and Optic 2000.
• The car took part in the 2018 Tour Auto, finishing 79th in the regularity classification, driven by François Allain and his co-driver Robert Puyal.
• Fully restored and customised by the 2CV Méhari Club Cassis, following its discovery in a barn in 2017. The car had been in the same owner’s possession since 1958.
Unveiled at the Paris Motor Show in 1948, the Citroën 2CV epitomises the people’s car par excellence. Designed to motorise post-war rural France, this rare Type A variant from the early years of production is distinguished by its 375 cm³ engine developing 9 chevaux, its long soft top revealing the entire passenger compartment, and its famous metallic grey paintwork. This early version is also characterised by the absence of a visible boot lid.
The car on display boasts a particularly remarkable history, both in terms of heritage and motorsport. In 2017, the 2CV Méhari Club Cassis acquired this car, which was discovered in a barn after having been kept by the same owner since 1958.
The aim of the project is to pay tribute to Citroën’s official participation in the 1951 Tour Auto, when the marque entered its brand-new 2CV Type A, driven by Jean Degorces and André Chene. That first venture unfortunately ended in retirement.
Determined to ‘complete the unfinished 1951 tour’, the 2CV Méhari Club Cassis has teamed up with journalist and presenter François Allain, a great connoisseur of the model, as well as with renowned partners such as Michelin and Optic 2000.
Fully restored and prepared by the specialists in Cassis, this Type A has been technically modified to meet the demands of such a challenge. Its modest original 9-chevaux engine has therefore been replaced with a powertrain from a Citroën Ami 6, producing around 20 chevaux, to provide performance better suited to road driving.
Entered in the 2018 Tour Auto with François Allain at the wheel and Robert Puyal as co-driver, the car rose to the challenge successfully and crossed the finish line, securing a remarkable 79th place in the regularity classification.
As an anecdote, the nimbleness and lightness of this little Citroën apparently even allowed the crew to overtake a Ford GT40 whilst driving through a village, making the most of the speed bumps to gain the edge!
This meticulous restoration and specialist preparation allow the car to be enjoyed to the full at historic events, whilst preserving the aesthetic authenticity of this veteran of French motoring.
This 1952 Citroën 2CV Type A offers its future owner the chance to take part in the fabulous adventure of the Tour Auto at the wheel of one of the most popular and iconic French cars in motoring history.
