Description
APPERT (Nicolas). L'Art de conserver pendant plusieurs années toutes les substances animales et végétales. Paris, Patris & Cie, 1810. In-8, half-brown basane with small corners, ornate smooth spine, long title page, blue speckled edges (Binding of the period). Rare first edition of this work, the birth certificate of the tin can. It contains a fold-out plate engraved by N.-L. Rousseau. It was at his estate in Massy, in the Seine-et-Oise region, that the confectioner François-Nicolas Appert began his research into food preservation in 1790. Napoleon's military requirements and the growth of the navy prompted the authorities to offer a prize to anyone who could develop a preserving process that could be made public. Appert won the prize and published the results of his work in this book, which made him one of humanity's benefactors during his lifetime. However, he was not to reap the benefits of his process, appertisation, and died poor and virtually forgotten. A copy with the author's autograph signature on the verso of the title page. Corners dull. Bitting, 13 - Vicaire, 34 - Oberlé, n°184 - En français dans le texte, n°220.
