Description
APICIUS. De Re culinaria Libri X... Praeterea P. PLATINÆ Cremonensis... Basel, [Johannes Herwagen], 1541. In-4, bradel half-velin, ochre cloth cover (Modern binding). Basel edition, published in March 1541 by the Swiss humanist and physician Alban Thorer or Torinus (1489-1550), who dedicated it to George of Württemberg. The work is divided into ten books, dealing with preservation, bread, garden produce, vegetables, poultry, offal, quadrupeds, seafood, fishing, etc. Alban Torinus added a number of treatises on cooking and dietetics to Apicius' masterpiece: De Condituris variis by Jean de Damas; De Facultatibus alimentorum, an extract from a treatise by Paul of Aegina, a seventh-century Greek physician; De Tuenda valetudine by Platine, the most important fifteenth-century treatise on cooking, which had a huge influence throughout the Renaissance. Two leaves of a liturgical calendar for the use of Clermont are bound at the head and end of the work. They are complete with the 12 months. Printed in Limoges by Claude Garnier and sold in Clermont by François Lupin, 1541, these two leaves were inserted in the cardboard of the second cover of the original binding. The unidentified arms on the first cover of the modern binding have nothing to do with the volume (note from the last owner of the work on a loose leaf). Mottling. Angular restoration to the first 12 leaves. Vicaire, 30 - Bitting, 11 - Soete Cat. 39, n°138 - Oberlé, Fastes 5 et 6 (Lyon edition).
