TAKE YOUR SEAT! A selection from the Werner Löffler collection Expert: Jean-Marc Maury T. +33 (0)6 85 30 36 66 [email protected] FEES PAYABLE BY THE SUCCESSFUL BIDDER: 27% excluding VAT VAT rate: 5.50% on the total hammer price plus fees (excluding VAT) A selection from the Werner Löffler collection We will be auctioning a significant selection of chairs from the Werner Löffler collection, one of the most remarkable private collections dedicated to the history and evolution of this universal object. A German entrepreneur specialising in the design of ergonomic furniture, Werner Löffler began his collection in 1987 with the acquisition of Ettore Sottsass’s Theodora armchair. For nearly forty years, he passionately and meticulously assembled a collection of chairs from all eras, selected for their quality of craftsmanship, technical ingenuity, appropriate use of materials and the strength of their design. The collection offers an exceptional overview of the history of seating and design. Chairs, armchairs, stools, benches, prototypes and experimental models bear witness to the evolution of forms, techniques and uses, from traditional craftsmanship to the most daring innovations of the 20th and 21st centuries. The great names in design feature alongside lesser-known designers and anonymous pieces, selected for their aesthetic value or historical significance. Rather than merely amassing objects, Werner Löffler conceived his collection as a genuine tool for study and knowledge-sharing. Each chair has been considered in its own right, documented and placed within its creative context. Together, the collection thus forms a material and cultural history of the act of sitting, in which each object reveals an era, a craft, and a particular conception of the body and space. Having already been showcased in several European institutions, notably the Kunstmuseum Ahlen, the Heinrich-Neuy-Bauhaus-Museum in Steinfurt and the Grassi Museum für Angewandte Kunst in Leipzig, the Werner Löffler collection is a benchmark in the field of furniture and design. Following an initial sale organised by Artcurial in Paris in March 2026, the ‘Prenez place!’ auction at Drouot will unveil a new chapter in this exceptional collection. It will offer collectors, interior designers and design enthusiasts the opportunity to acquire chairs that are not merely functional objects, but bear witness to a living history of forms, materials and uses.
