From the Maghreb to the shores of the Levant, 19th- and 20th-century European artists turned their gaze towards an Orient that was both a dream and a place they had explored. Trained in Parisian studios and drawn to the light, architecture and figures of a seemingly foreign world, they brought back from their travels scenes that oscillated between romantic fascination and meticulous observation of reality. Théodore Frère captured the markets of Cairo, Guillaumet the silences of the Algerian desert, Bridgman the mosques of Algiers, whilst Roubtzoff and Majorelle depicted the everyday life of the streets they frequented — all unique perspectives which, taken together, form a sensitive and complex cartography of the southern shores of the Mediterranean. This fascination with foreign lands also extended to sub-Saharan Africa, where Africanist painters drew on new sources of inspiration. Their works bear witness to the diversity of perspectives on these regions, ranging from aesthetic fascination and observation of everyday life to the search for new pictorial horizons. By bringing these works together and carefully contextualising them, Millon continues a tradition of expertise that pays close attention to provenance and the history of collections, in order to offer a fresh interpretation of this pictorial heritage.
