The time has come to let these little treasures, gathered over more than twenty years, find new – and happy – owners. Most of the authors and illustrators in this collection have, at one time or another, managed to combine their genius and their madness, whether by design or by force of circumstance… But was it their genius that drove them mad, or their madness that made them geniuses? Could it be the search for an answer to this question that led me to bring these works together? Some of the authors in this collection consulted psychiatrists (Raymond Roussel saw Dr Janet, Georges Bataille saw Dr Borel), experienced ‘artificial paradises’ (Antonin Artaud, Henri Michaux), were confined to psychiatric institutions for long periods (Antonin Artaud and Unika Zürn), or even took their own lives (René Crevel and, once again, Unika Zürn)... All (or almost all?) channelled their creative energies towards eroticism. Out of inclination, I set out in search of the traces—printed, written or drawn—of these states of consciousness, these mental waves, where life’s obscene laughter borders on the vertigo of death, and from which springs a pure, powerful, indescribable emotion. A salutary emotion in the face of the absurdity of existence, which one suddenly dodges, like the bullfighter facing the beast in the arena, to soar towards the realms of the erotic dream. So do make a point of reading; it is the key to life. Read – aloud – the opening paragraphs of *Irène’s Cunt*, or the verses from *The Beauty and the Cock*. Read *Histoire de l’œil*, read *Héliogabale*, immerse yourselves in the dreamlike world of Dalí – the one illustrating *Onan*, the one adorning *The Immaculate Conception* – and enter the world created solely by the imagination of Raymond Roussel… And don’t forget to play – ‘exquisite corpses’? – and to laugh.
